About Fuchs Lubritech

Who we are

FUCHS is the world’s largest independent lubricant manufacturer, supplying superior products and services to many diverse market sectors. Expertise exists in all automotive and industrial applications in addition to specialist sectors such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage.

We have a strong focus on R&D, providing customers with the latest in lubricant innovation – products developed within the last 5 years generate 70% of sales. To accompany our high performance lubricants, we provide expert technical support and service ranging from a 24 hour technical help line to a complete chemical process management package.

Manufacturing Excellence

The FUCHS Group has a worldwide reputation for outstanding performance and product quality. Our UK manufacturing site is audited to the highest levels and we have been awarded a wide range of quality standards. We acknowledge our responsibility, and strive to meet or exceed our customer’s and partner’s expectations and those of future generations. View our certificates, policies and registrations.

We’re dedicated to sustainable manufacturing and environmental awareness. We have invested in solar panels across our Stoke-on-Trent site which are expected to generate over 380,000kWh of clean, renewable energy per year with a reduction in carbon emissions of 4,008 tonnes over 20 years. This should generate over 12% of the required energy for our manufacturing plant. As a major producer of lubricants and industrial fluids, we are fully committed to producing high quality products whilst striving to reduce our environmental impact in purchasing, manufacturing, distribution, waste generation, energy consumption and disposal.

More information

  • Fuchs Production
Production at our UK head quarters covers 16,000 product lines, ranging from the engine oil used in cars coming off the production lines of the country’s major manufacturers through to everyday medicinal products such as petroleum jelly. Our manufacturing plant is over 18,000 square metres, and has more than 5,000 I/Os, 1,000 valves, 90 raw material tanks, 38 blending vessels, and a large number of finished product tanks. Our blending operation utilises the highly modern SIEMENS PCS 7 distributed control system (DCS). The FUCHS engineering team are able to undertake a continuous improvement programme to maximise and improve production efficiency even further. The system ensures that FUCHS can continue to go from strength to strength with an intelligent and flexible distributed process control system. Using this modern system means FUCHS has high plant availability, reduced cycle times, lower levels of waste, total production transparency and complete flexibility. As well as standard plastic packaging, such as 20L plastic containers, FUCHS are continually striving to reduce our environmental impact – one way in which we do this is through our lube cube. The lube cube is 98% recyclable, and our specifically designed filling machine ensures these can be filled just as quickly as the plastic alternative.
  • Fuchs Research and Development
The FUCHS Group has a very strong focus on R&D with more than 400 chemists, engineers and specialists in more than 40 laboratories worldwide. The UK labs are extremely well equipped and audited to the highest levels, having state-of-the-art equipment and highly trained staff with extensive technology and application knowledge. Regular dialogue with OEMs, other industry bodies and component suppliers maintains technical advantages. Our continued investment in R&D ensures that we are at the forefront of lubricant technology, which is demonstrated by the fact that products developed within the last 5 years generate 70% of sales. We have a wealth of experience at FUCHS and are committed to training up the chemists of the future. Our team comprises of highly trained individuals including employees with qualifications such as Chartered Chemist CChemMRSC, BSc Hons Chemistry, PHD Synthesis of Vinyl Phosphate Monomers. We have members of our team who have worked at FUCHS for many years, many of our senior management have been with FUCHS for over 20 years!
  • Fuchs Quality
The FUCHS Group has a worldwide reputation for outstanding performance and product quality. All new products are developed with one goal in mind: maximum service life, providing maximum asset protection with practical operational use. All products are test validated in our laboratories before market launch. Below are some of the tests that we carry out at our facility to ensure product quality and consistency:
    • Pentration
    • Drop Point (IP 371)
    • Viscosity
    • Elemental analysis by ICP: ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) Spectroscopy testing is carried out to detect metal elements present in raw materials or finished product. ICP detects metal elements down to parts per million (ppm) levels with the results being compared to a reference. This technique ensures that the correct additive levels are present within a defined range.
    • FITR analysis: We conduct FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) testing which produces an IR absorption plot that can be used to check that there are no unknown materials present in the batch sample.
  • Fuchs Sustainability
As a major producer of lubricants and industrial fluids, we are fully committed to producing high quality products whilst striving to reduce our environmental impact in purchasing, manufacturing, distribution, waste generation, energy consumption and disposal. We know that our work has a significant impact on the quality of people’s lives, not only here and now but in the future, and we’re continually looking at long-term solutions to ensure we meet our customers expectations and those of future generations.
Power Generated from our Solar Panels
Since installation in February 2014 403,410 kWh has been generated (as at 18/11/2014).
    Environmental Awareness
As part of our Sustainable Manufacturing Programme, we have invested in 2,001 solar photovoltaic panels at our Stoke-on-Trent manufacturing plant. The solar panels are expected to generate over 380,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy per year, with a reduction in carbon emissions of 4,008 tonnes over 20 years. This is the equivalent to taking approximately 41 vehicles off the road every year or providing enough electricity to power 10 homes each year. The solar panel will provide 12% of the required energy at the Stoke manufacturing site for the next 20 years. Other Environmental Initiatives include customers with biodegradable lubricants and eco-friendly packs. Our Lube Cubes are 98% recyclable, reduce waste, and are more space efficient than conventional packaging. We also provide customers with our PLANTO range, which is based on renewable resources. Leakages, spills and unavoidable contact with the environment can cause ecological harm, using PLANTO products can help to minimise these risks and provide a rapidly biodegradable alternative to standard products with no loss of performance.
    Sustainable Manufacturing
Sustainability is one of the core elements of our business strategy. We have been manufacturing at our Stoke-on-Trent site for over a century. Our Disaster Prevention and Recovery Plan helps to ensure we’ll still be manufacturing for another century, providing peace of mind to our employees and customers about the future of UK manufacture here. Our key feature of our Disaster Prevention and Recovery Plan is our advanced automatic sprinkler system and water towers. The automatic sprinkler system should allow for adequate cover in the event of a fire, with sprinkler heads covering each of the 5,000 pallet locations and the ability to distribute 11,854 litres per minute. Where foam is needed, an additional 3% of the needed water demand is held in separate foam tanks. The installation of the sprinkler system is just one of the long-term investments in sustainability good practices employed across the FUCHS site. The FUCHS Disaster Prevention and Recovery Plan is highly advanced and also includes dedicated aerosol storage and caging, electrical maintenance programmes including thermographic surveys, and guarded HID light fixtures.
